The First Two Months New Puppy Guideline

If your puppy jumps or falls off the couch or bed he or she could be hurt very badly possibly forever. The rule of thumb is, when your new puppy is old enough to jump up on furniture on their own, they should be strong enough to jump off at that point in time.

He or she has never done them before. Start slowly and gradually and help him or her go up and down by showing your puppy how to take the steps one step at a time

and does not understand danger like you and I do. Your puppy must be watched very closely around high places like balconies and decks and swimming pools, your puppy could easily fall into a pool and drown not knowing how or where to get out of the pool.

to run or slip or slide on slippery flooring He or she can get hurt easily, causing carpal tunnel syndrome (where the puppies ankle will pop out and will need to be put in a brace for 5 to 7 weeks), pulled ligaments and slipped disks in knees causing injured ACL and even hip dysplasia if allowed to run up and down steps and slip and slide on wood or tile floors.  Please put down area rugs or corner rugs and or runners.

They are just like toddlers. Do not let them!  When walking outside, if your puppy is grazing and not doing his or her business, bring them back inside. They can eat rocks, sand, and poisonous plants! So if they drop their heads and are surfing and not just enjoying the outdoors and enjoying and playing with you and they keep putting things in their mouth you are asking for trouble and possibly an emergency visit to the vet!  So stay on top of your puppy, and don’t assume that your puppy knows what is safe and not safe to put in his or her mouth any more than a 1 to 3 year old toddler would know what is right and wrong. ☺

with you right next to your bed at night. Your new puppy has just lost all of their litter mates and previous  breeder/owner and is now with you. Your new puppy needs to be able to see and smell you as close as possible. Until your puppy is trained through the night we recommend you put their crate right next to your bed, or a soft crate right next to your bed as most puppies don’t want to chew out of their crate if they can see you. If you are going to leave him or her alone, be sure it is a metal or airline crate that he or she cannot chew their way out of!  If you want to sleep, put your new puppy next to you with a powerful floor fan (all of our puppies are raised this way so it will be familiar), so that he or she sleeps thru the night, and if your new puppy needs to go out to do their business between 2 and 4 am, he or she will be able to tell you. ☺
